It Starts With a Smile.

Anxious Patients

It is not at all unusual if you are feeling anxious about seeing your dentist for treatment.

Our dentists at Concord Dental Practice are highly trained, very gentle, and ensure that you are comfortable before proceeding with any treatment.

We have three options of sedation here at Concord Dental Practice, to help our patients feel less anxious.

Penthrox

Penthrox (methoxyflurane) is a clear liquid with a characteristic fruity odour, which is breathed through an inhaler. The effects of penthrox are almost immediate and its use has a soothing result, which reduces pain effectively.

Nitrous Oxide

Alternatively, we also have nitrous oxide “happy gas” on site. Your dentist will administer the correct amount of this gas through a small mask, which is inhaled continuously throughout the dental procedure. Nitrous oxide makes you feel sleepy and relaxed, however, you will still be aware of what is happening around you. You may not be able to remember the procedure. Recovery after administration of the nitrous oxide is quick.

Intravenous Sedation

We also offer dental treatment performed under intravenous sedation with an anaesthetist.

IV or "twilight" sedation involves the adminstration of sedatives intravenously, which effectively and immediately calms you down. You are semi-awake, which means that you are still able to follow instructions however, the drugs ensure that you do not remember the dental procedure. Whilst you drift off into a state of drowsiness, you will be comfortable, very relaxed and the time will seem to pass very quickly. Your appointment will be over before you know it.

All types of dental treatment can be performed under IV sedation.  No procedure is too small for this sedation option, however, the most common treatments which are performed under IV sedation include:

- Wisdom teeth removal, orthodontic extractions and general tooth removal

- Dental implant placement

- General dental treatment such as fillings and crown work

The intravenous sedation will be performed by a fully qualified medical specialist doctor.  The doctor will be with you during the entire appointment, carefully monitoring you, until you have fully recovered. As your sedation is being administered by a registered medical practitioner, you will be eligibile to claim a Medicare rebate for the cost of the sedation.

Please speak to one of our friendly dentists at Concord Dental Practice if you would like to know more about these options.
